What is your philosophy over keeping up with the joneses in technology?

I believe there is a happy medium between your view and your parents. In today's society consumerism is a problem, a serious issue. Yet, the technological age is upon you and social and professional rules are changing. Your Parents wrote letters in their youth and waited for a week for a response. You text, and tweet, and email instantly. Where they had a few friends you can have hundreds even thousands. Once a corporate meeting meant actually meeting. Now you do a Skype conference from coffee shop to home office to, well where ever. There is one piece of advice I give the youth of today and that is the more you rely on others and technology for your well being, the more susceptible you are to disastrous life changes. I hope you give it a thinks.
