Unused Fridge in House - Water Purification?

I am about to buy a house and there is a fridge with stuff growing on the ice. I want to ensure that the water in the tank can be cleaned or the tank and line can be replaced. Is it possible with city water that contains chlorine in it that just running the water and ice maker for a month would cleanse the systems without replacement of internal parts?
